Naturopathy and Mental Health

By Corinne Leach

Why see a Naturopath AND a psychologist, even if you are taking medication for anxiety and depression I recently shared some Women’s mental health statistics from 2022 on Instagram, based on. Liptember’s recent study which you can read here.

The figures are alarming but have motivated me to speak up and take action. I want to discuss the role that I, as your Naturopath, can play in collaboratively managing your mental health. First-line (first port of call) medical treatment includes a combination of psychology or psychotherapy and medication such as SSRI’s, depending on the condition.

Firstly, I am NOT here to say that medication is not required. It very much is, and can literally be a lifesaver for some people. And psychology is essential for  coping with trauma and teaching you self-help and self-regulation skills to manage your condition, the long term.

Though from MY perspective, and where I come in, is that a holistic, whole-body view of health, strongly considering the gut-brain connection and theory of neuroinflammation, is also important in managing these conditions long-term.

I feel that medication and psychology may be even MORE effective alongside Naturopathy. This will include dietary and lifestyle changes, as well as safely prescribed, therapeutically dosed, herbal, and/or nutritional medicine. I can confidently prescribe these remedies after assessing any and ALL potential interactions with your prescribed medications. I can do this after taking your full case history, plus the help of online, comprehensive tools such as TRC Natural Medicines and Vital.ly interaction checker, AND work collaboratively with your GP and psychologist. You don’t have to suffer alone, please take the first step and reach out. And know that you are supported.
